Revelstoke was established in the 1880s when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) expanded through the area. Mining was a key industry during the town's early years. Initially called Farwell, after a local landowner and surveyor, the area was also known as the "Second Crossing" to distinguish it from the CPR's first crossing of the Columbia River at Donald. The town was eventually renamed Revelstoke by the Canadian Pacific Railway in honor of Lord Revelstoke, head of Baring Brothers & Co., the British investment bank that, in partnership with Glyn, Mills & Co., helped save the CPR from bankruptcy in 1885 by purchasing unsold bonds, ensuring the completion of the railway. The post office opened in 1886.

The construction of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1962 further improved access to the region, and tourism has since become a key component of the local economy. Skiing, in particular, has emerged as the town’s most popular attraction. Mount Revelstoke National Park lies just to the north, and Revelstoke Mountain Resort, a major ski resort located on Mount MacKenzie just outside of town, began construction in 2005, opening its doors for the 2007-2008 ski season. Revelstoke is also home to a railway museum, showcasing its rich railway history.
